THE HIDDEN VALUE IN EVERY SMARTPHONE: WHY REPAIR AND REUSE MATTER. LITHIUM, COBALT, COPPER, GOLD, GRAPHITE, QUARTZ

A Smartphone Is More Than Just Technology
We use our smartphones every day to communicate, work, find information and stay connected with the world around us. But do we ever stop to think about what it takes to manufacture a single smartphone? Behind the screen, battery and electronic components lies a global supply chain involving raw material extraction, mining, manufacturing and transportation. A smartphone contains dozens of different metals and other materials. Copper provides electrical connections. Gold and silver are used in electrical contacts and electronic components. Lithium, cobalt and graphite play an important role in batteries. Indium is used, among other things, in display technology, while rare earth elements are needed for certain types of magnets. The European Commission points out that a smartphone can contain up to around 50 different metals. Many of these are essential to the functioning of modern electronics. Some raw materials are also scarce, economically important or dependent on complex international supply chains. This makes a smartphone more than just a technological product: it is also a product that contains valuable natural resources.

The Impact Behind Our Smartphones
The extraction and processing of raw materials can have significant consequences for people and the environment. These include energy and water consumption, damage to ecosystems, and risks to workers' health and safety. Manufacturing new smartphones also requires raw materials, energy and transportation. When a phone is replaced prematurely even though it could still be repaired, some of the value of its materials and the energy invested in the product is lost. Electronic waste is another growing challenge. Old mobile phones contain both valuable and potentially harmful materials. That is why it is important to collect and process unused devices correctly. According to the European Commission, an estimated 700 million unused and discarded mobile phones were being kept in EU households in 2023. At the same time, collection rates for old mobile phones remained particularly low. This highlights the considerable potential that still exists for reuse, repair and recycling.

Repair Before Replacing
At MTimpex, we believe that a faulty component does not automatically mean the end of a smartphone. A damaged screen, a worn-out battery or a defective connector can prevent a device from functioning properly. When technically and economically viable, a repair can restore the device to working order. By replacing components and professionally restoring devices, we can extend their useful life and prevent functional products from being discarded unnecessarily. That is why we see repair not only as a technical service, but also as a way to use raw materials more responsibly. A smartphone that lasts longer does not need to be replaced as quickly. And when a device can no longer be repaired economically, suitable components may still be reused. Wherever possible, the remaining materials should be recycled. Repair, refurbishment and recycling each have their own role to play. But it all starts with one question: can we preserve what still has value?
Refurbishment: Preserving Value Throughout the Supply Chain
Refurbishment offers opportunities to restore used smartphones and components for further use. For example, suitable damaged displays can be professionally restored through display refurbishment using specialised equipment and processes. Used smartphones can also be returned to the market after careful inspection, repair and functional testing. This requires the right machinery, high-quality components, technical expertise and reliable quality control. When carried out professionally, refurbishment can extend product lifespans and help reduce the demand for new components or entirely new devices. The actual environmental benefits depend on factors such as the process used, energy consumption, the quality of the refurbishment and whether the product is subsequently reused. For us, refurbishment is therefore an important development within the professional repair market.
Europe Is Moving Towards a Circular Electronics Industry
The European Union is also taking steps to keep products in use for longer. The European Right to Repair Directive and ecodesign requirements for smartphones and tablets are making repair a more integral part of the product lifecycle. These regulations address, among other things, repairability, the availability of certain spare parts, battery durability and software support. In addition, through the Critical Raw Materials Act, the European Union aims to strengthen the security of supply of key raw materials and promote recycling and circularity. These developments show that product longevity and the responsible use of raw materials are becoming increasingly important. They also create opportunities for the professional repair market to further develop repair services, spare parts supply and refurbishment. For MTimpex, this is an important motivation to continue adapting our services and product range to the changing market.

Our Vision: A Circular Future for Smartphones
We believe in a world where smartphones are not discarded unnecessarily but remain in use for as long as possible. A world where repair and refurbishment are natural choices, and technology does not come at the expense of people, the environment or natural resources. MTimpex wants to contribute to a circular smartphone supply chain in which value is preserved, waste is reduced and every device gets the chance of a second life.
Our Mission: Making Repair Possible
MTimpex makes professional smartphone repair more accessible by supporting repair businesses and refurbishers with high-quality spare parts, advanced repair and refurbishment equipment, technical expertise and reliable service. Together, We Give Technology a Second Life
A more sustainable smartphone supply chain cannot be created by one company or one solution alone. It requires collaboration between suppliers, wholesalers, repair businesses, refurbishers and consumers. Every repair that keeps a device in use for longer, every suitable component that is reused and every smartphone that is collected responsibly can contribute to better use of our natural resources. At MTimpex, we want to support this development with the products, expertise and solutions that professionals need. Because the future of technology is not just about what we can manufacture anew, but also about what we can preserve.
